Rio Nangaritza

Vilcabamba  travel guide southern ecuador, vilcabamba, zamora

While it has more recently been popularised as a Gringo party place, Vilcabamba's inital popularity arose from it's proximity to the Podocarpus National Park and it's international fame as a "Valley of Longevity".
With some of the most stunning scenery in the Ecuadorian Sierra and a year round spring like climate, Vilcabamba is an ideal spot for hiking, horse trekking and birding in and around the Podocarpus park as well as just taking a break and relaxing. Many visitors to Vilcabamba have told us it has been the highlight of their visit to Ecuador, it's a shame to miss it.

Hotels

Cabañas Río Yambala is 4kms. to the east of the Vilcabamba village, in the foothills of the Podocarpus park. Private cabins in spacious grounds, with balconies and hammocks overlook the picturesque valley. Directions and information for local walks, bird lists and a check list of the most commonly seen birds are available. A restaurant serves veg & non-veg dinners & breakfast. There is a riverside Finnish style Sauna. Tours into the Podocarpus National Park are easily arranged.

1 to 3 day hiking or horse trekking tours are easily arranged to their Cloud Forest Reserve, Las Palmas, 8kms up valley, bordering and within the Podocarpus Park. As well as it's pristine waterfalls, Las Palmas offers the only tree canopy tour and the only access to the Lake and Paramo region from Vilcabamba. The first pioneering ecotourism project in the Podocarpus buffers zone, Las Palmas lies in the most pristine region of the Vilcabamba valley. For more information visit Vilcabamba

Puyango  travel guide southern ecuador, vilcabamba, zamora

Puyango Park is a semi-tropical forest with petrified fosils, both vegetabale and animal, resulting from volcanic activity and inundations from the sea. It is not too far off the costal route to Peru from Loja, or vice-versa. You may want to travel this way if you plan to go to, or are coming from, the costal town of Mancora in Peru.
The park has an information area & small museum. Guides are always available on arrival.
Get off the bus at the police control. They can get you a car to the park entrance if you want. Camping is possible in the park, but there are no hotels.
Alamor is the closest place with a hotel, but not very nice. Pindal is nicer.
